Rachel Whorton – Artistic Director

After years of experience performing and choreographing on the stage I decided to focus on using the medium of film. The company’s current project ‘Vacillation’ was originally created as part of my Advanced Directors course whilst studying at Aberystwyth university. The theme, seven stages of life, is universal and can be approached in many ways and with different interpretations. It seemed logical to split this into seven shorts with an eighth longer film as the full production. I started with ‘Adulthood’ in 2014 which became much more of a biographical piece than originally expected. ‘Adolescence’ is a Pas de Deux showing a snapshot of a boy and girl’s lives and was released in 2015. ‘Pregnancy’ follows the nine month period from a husband and wife discovering they are pregnant through to full term and was released in 2016. ‘Old Age’ is currently in pre-Production and due to be completed in 2020.

My roots in classical ballet have never left me. Years of training and almost obsessing to strive for perfectionism in this art form just won’t go away. So rather than running from it, Pointe Ahead allows me to embrace it and to pass this passion on to others. The aim is to create classical work set in everyday situations, the office, commuting to work, kids meeting in a skatepark, the shopping centre, cafes, environments that everyone can relate to and find familiar. The stage is a wonderful place to see performers live, you can feel the energy and spirit of each individual but is also an abstract environment. I want to bring some of that life through the medium of film and hopefully eradicate some of the ’suspension of disbelief’.
